As per a report of WabetaInfo, WhatsApp is working on a new feature to let you search images on the web. Earlier, the Meta-owned instant messaging app was reported to be working on a feature to search links on the web to let the users verify the authenticity of the link without the need to leave the app.
On a similar note, WhatsApp is now working on a feature to check the shared images on the web. As per a screenshot shared by WabetaInfo, the feature will help you find a similar kind of image that you have received on WhatsApp directly on the web. It will be first uploaded to Google for the search and it will help you verify the legitimacy of images from other news stories, memes or social media posts from where the image could have been shared.

Remember the new image search feature that allows users to quickly find more information about a specific image they receive. It’s especially useful for identifying misleading or fake images that are shared in your WhatsApp group chats and personal messages. The feature helps verify the source and authenticity of the image by searching for similar images or the original version on the web.
The report further clarified that when the image is sent to Google, it’s not shared with WhatsApp, ensuring user privacy. Once released, this feature will be available for all images, regardless of how they were shared. It’s useful for verifying the source of an image, identifying potential fake news, or confirming the authenticity of a photo circulating on social media. The image search is entirely optional, giving users full control over initiating a search.
