Telangana to scrap vehicles older than 15 years from Jan 1, 2025

If private vehicles pass the fitness test, they will be allowed to operate for the next 3-5 years by paying a green tax.

Hyderabad: From January 1, 2025, Telangana government will prevent vehicles older than 15 years from plying on roads, reports said.

Vehicles which fail the fitness test will not be allowed to register or operate on roads. The owners of the vehicles will have two options, either to scrap them or pay a fine when caught plying on roads.

Interestingly, if the vehicles pass the fitness test, they will be allowed to operate for the next 3-5 years by paying a green tax. This exemption is not applicable for government vehicles and around 10,000 of them have to be scrapped if they are older than 15 years old.

Regional Transport Authority (RTA), has drawn up a draft of vehicle scrappage policy and submitted it to the government.

How many 15-year-old vehicles in GHMC limits?

Additionally, all abandoned vehicles will be scrapped while non-transport and commercial vehicles, if found unfit during renewal, will be scrapped.

In the GHMC limits alone, there are 20 lakh vehicles which are older than 15 years old. Of them, 17 lakh are two-wheelers, 3.5 lakh cars and 1 lakh goods carriages and 20,000 auto rickshaws. Around 1,000 RTC buses may also face scrapping and school buses are also a part of the ageing fleet.

State government may offer tax rebate:

To incentivize this, the government may offer a rebate of 10-15 percent on motor vehicle tax on the purchase of a new one.

The state government is expected to approve the policy soon and it will be implemented soon after. After it is approved, vehicle scrappage facility centers will begin operations, joint transport commissioner told Times of India. The aim is to remove those vehicles which contribute to pollution.
