Mumbai News

Each speed breaker has a message printed on them educating people about the importance of regular health check-ups for early detection of the breast cancer. The message read, “Some bumps can slow down life.”

Mumbai: Many speed breakers in Juhu, Santacruz and Bandra (West) are being painted with pink lines by Nanavati Max Hospital. The hospital is painting the speed breakers under its campaign to increase awareness regarding breast cancer.

October is observed as breast cancer awareness month by WHO. Pink colour is associated with breast cancer because pink ribbon is an international symbol for breast cancer awareness. The hospital used this pink colour in a creative way for spreading awareness about pink colour. The hospital has launched a campaign for cancer awareness under which it is painting many speed-breakers in area of Mumbai with pink colour.

As per a report by Mid-day, each speed has a message printed on them educating people about the importance of regular health check-ups for early detection of the disease. The message read, “Some bumps can slow down life.”

Screening still very less

According to Dr Garvit Chitkara, Senior Consultant, Breast Surgical Oncology and Oncoplasty, “The awareness about significance of early check-ups have been increasing, yet, it is still very less. Government need to push awareness campaigns in this regard. The campaigns about breast cancer can inspire her to go for screening or at least think about it.”

Age group most vulnerable to breast cancer

When asked about the details of breast cancer he said, “The women between age group 45 to 60 years are particularly vulnerable to it, but this does not mean that women of other age groups cannot have breast cancer.” Talking about the pink breaker campaign, the doctor said, “Utilising any public structure like speed breaker to spread awareness about importance of screening is very good idea. If a pink speed breaker encourage women to take break from day-to-day life and go for screening, it can save many life. Even if one life is saved from this, it would mean that the campaign is successful.
