Mumbai: The State Transport Department is working on making stringent rules for traffic violators on the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) also known as Atal Setu. The authorities are set to incorporate The Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) which will help the system in identifying the vehicles defying traffic rules including driving a car without wearing a seatbelt.
The official of the State Transport Department said that the testing of the new system will be done by this week. The new system is designed to detect vehicles that exceed the speed limit and other traffic violations. About 15 types of violations can be detected by it which will help the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) in imposing penalties, as per a report by The Indian Express.
Despite being open to the public since its launch in January 2024, the Atal Setu (MTHL) has not issued any traffic violation fines. Motorists using the sea bridge have only received notifications regarding insufficient FASTag balance. Once the ITMS is completely tested and approved, traffic violators will start receiving fines.
Atal Setu is the longest sea bridge in India at 21.8 km (with 16 km over water) and is equipped with advanced artificial intelligence technology. High-quality AI-enabled cameras on the bridge detect even minor traffic violations. Moreover, pan-tilt-zoom cameras capture 360-degree view of vehicles on the bridge, which enhances traffic surveillance.
The ITMS cost Rs 520 for its installation. It incorporates various advanced features like CCTV surveillance, an under-bridge surveillance system, AI-based video analytics, emergency calling boxes, section speed cameras, and vehicle-actuated speed displays. This comprehensive system is expected to significantly enhance traffic management on the bridge, as per a report published by the Indian Express.
According to the MMRDA, Strabag Austria has been tasked with the operations, maintenance, and toll collection for MTHL. After successful completion of the ITMS testing, all video footage captured at the control and monitoring centre located at Chirle will go for review by the Regional Transport Office (RTO) officials.
The Atal Setu has proven to be of great help for commuters from South Mumbai to Navi Mumbai, cutting down around one hour of travel. As per MMRDA, From January 13 to August 25, 2024, a total of 50,04,350 vehicles have used the bridge.
