Mumbai: Man attacks wife with acid as she finds out about his affair, seeks divorce

As per sources, the couple had a love marriage in 2019. However, after the wedding, the woman soon found out that her husband was jobless, had drug addiction, and also had an extramarital affair. This prompted the woman to seek a divorce from him.

Mumbai: A man threw acid on his wife’s face after she found out about his extramarital affair and asked for divorce. The crime took place in the Malvani area of Mumbai. The woman’s family rushed her to Cooper hospital where she is undergoing treatment for severe burns.

The man, identified as 34-year-old Shabbir Khan, threw acid on his wife’s face on Wednesday morning. As per sources, the couple had a love marriage in 2019. However, after the wedding, the woman soon found out that her husband was jobless, had drug addiction, and also had an extramarital affair. This prompted the woman to seek a divorce from him.

Mumbai Police takes action

The woman had left her husband and was staying with her mother in Malad for the past three months. On Wednesday, the accused broke into her mother’s house and threw acidic substance on her face, causing serious injuries. The woman lodged a complaint against her husband after which a team of Mumbai Police has started investigation into the matter.

The accused was arrested and a case was registered against him under sections 311 (Robbery or dacoity with an attempt to cause death or grievous hurt), 124(2) (Voluntarily causing hurt by use of acid), 352 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), and 333 (House-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault, or wrongful restraint), of the Bharitya Nayaya Sanhita (BNS).

 

Crime against women

As per a recent report, 121 cases of crime against women were recorded in Maharashtra every day on an average. In addition to this, 55 cases of crime against children were also recorded every day in the state. As per the data by the state economic survey, the state recorded 132,238 cases of crime against women and 59,796 cases of crime against children from 2021 to 2023. The data also highlighted a significant spike in sexual harassment cases.
