Celebrity News

A viral clip making rounds online showing Indian fan asks Selena Gomez to repeat the phrase ‘Jai Shri Ram’ has the internet in disbelief. Here is what Selena said and how netizens reacted to the video.

New Delhi: Selena Gomez is an International icon with fans all across the world. During fan interactions, the singer-actress has had the opportunity to meet millions of admirers. While most fans ask Selena for a picture or a video message for themselves of their loved ones, when an Indian man met Selena, things did not end the same.

A viral clip showed an Indian man asking the American singer to repeat the phrase ‘Jai Shri Ram’. A traditional chant that means – victory to Lord Ram – is used to express devotion to the deity. The video has been making rounds on social media garnering an overwhelmingly negative reaction from netizens. Here is what happened.

Selena Gomez’s awkward fan interaction

In the video, the man introduces Selena Gomez to the phrase ‘Jai Shri Ram’. While the singer tried to understand what the fan was trying to express, she slowly repeated the phrase. The man claims this phrase to be “India’s best slogan”. It seems that Selena did not wish to say a phrase she did not fully grasp, she simply smiled and said, “Thank you, honey,” and left. While the original post suggested that the clip is recent, fans have deduced that Selena’s makeup and outfit match that of the Cannes Film Festival 2023 in France.

Netizens call the clip an ’embarrassment’

The clip went viral on Instagram and X where netizens called this video embarrassing and a ‘bad rep for Indians’. Netizens condemned such actions and criticised the man for it.

Take a look at the clip below –

“Our religion doesn’t need unnecessary foreign validation. Stop embarrassing yourself and us along with you,” read a comment. Feeling second-hand embarrassment, a user wrote, “So ‘Namaste’ is no longer how we greet each other now…” The comment section of the original post was filled with netizens left disappointed and angry. Most comments echoed the sentiment that despite having a chance to meet one of the most popular celebrities in the world, the man gave it all up and brought religion into the picture.
