Driving drunk with students on board, Bengaluru cops book 21 school bus drivers

Bengaluru Police intensified road safety efforts by booking 21 school bus drivers for drunk driving after inspecting 3,924 buses. Each driver tested positive for alcohol, prompting the Karnataka transport department to consider severe penalties, including possible license cancellations.

Bengaluru: Yet again, in a significant move to enhance road safety, Bengaluru Police have taken strict measures against school bus drivers driving under the influence of alcohol. On Monday, authorities booked 21 such drivers following a citywide inspection of 3,924 school buses.

The operation revealed a troubling trend, with each of the 21 drivers found to be intoxicated while behind the wheel. As a result, the Karnataka transport department is expected to impose severe penalties, including the likely cancellation of their driving licenses.

“Today, a special operation was conducted to check for school and college vehicle drivers under the jurisdiction of the Jalahalli Traffic Police Station who were driving under the influence of alcohol,” reads the translation of Bengaluru Traffic Police X (formerly Twitter) post originally posted in Kannada.

RTO’s recommended to seize the alleged vehicles: Cop

As per a  police spokesperson, authorities have seized vehicles operated by drivers under the influence and have recommended that the relevant Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) cancel their permits. The police emphasised their commitment to enforcing traffic regulations to protect the safety of the community and assured that special operations would continue to uphold road safety standards.

Similar crackdown in July

This crackdown follows a similar initiative in July, when police conducted random drunk driving tests on school bus drivers, resulting in 23 drivers testing positive for alcohol. Growing concerns over reckless driving and traffic violations involving school buses have prompted police to implement surprise checks. Authorities are responding to numerous complaints from the public, warning that drivers caught violating regulations will face revocation of their licenses.

The ongoing efforts by Bengaluru Police highlight a proactive approach to ensuring the safety of schoolchildren and the community at large.
