Today’s weather report: Respite from heavy rains over the last two days in Chennai is predicted to be short lived as the IMD predicted a fresh spell of rainfall in parts of Tamil Nadu on Thursday and coming few days.

New Delhi: Parts of Tamil Nadu including Chennai will continue to receive heavy downpours on Thursday as the India Meteorological Department issued a very heavy rain warning for the state, besides predicting heavy rains in coastal Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and the Konkan region.

In its all India weather bulletin, the weatherman predicted a wet spell for the next five days in Andhra Pradesh, Rayalseema, Tamil Nadu and other parts of southern India.

Weather report today by IMD:

Tamil Nadu & Puducherry: Light to moderate rainfall over most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places is very likely over north Tamil Nadu & Puducherry on 16th October. Light to moderate rainfall over most places with heavy rainfall at isolated places is very likely over south Tamil Nadu during 16th – 17th October.

South Andhra Pradesh & Rayalaseema: Light to moderate rainfall over most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places is likely on 16th October and heavy rainfall at isolated places is likely on 17th October.

Kerala & south Interior Karnataka: Light to moderate rainfall over most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places is likely over Kerala and south Interior Karnataka on 16th October and heavy rainfall at isolated places is likely on 17th October.

Warning for fishermen

Given the current weather pattern, the IMD has cautioned fishermen not to venture into the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal on Thursday while fishermen who are already out at sea are advised to return to the coasts.

Chennai rains

Rains subsided across most parts of northern Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, on Wednesday, providing relief to residents. Chief Minister MK Stalin announced that water stagnation had been cleared in most areas. To support the poor and vulnerable, Stalin also declared that free meals would be served in Amma canteens across Chennai on October 16 and 17.

As the weather improved, traffic flow returned to normal on city roads, with no disruptions reported in public transport. The Regional Meteorological Centre released a list of areas that experienced extremely heavy rainfall between 8:30 AM on October 15 and 8:30 AM on October 16.
