New Delhi: In a significant initiative ahead of the Purvanchali festival of Chhath, the Delhi government announced on Monday the establishment of 1,000 “model ghats” across the city. Chief Minister Atishi shared details during a high-level meeting, emphasising the need to provide adequate facilities for the millions of devotees expected to participate in the celebrations.

The planned ghats will be located in all 70 assembly constituencies, ensuring accessibility for devotees across the capital. Chief Minister Atishi highlighted the importance of collaborating with local Chhath Puja committees, urging officials to seek their input in organising essential arrangements for the festival.

Each ghat to be equipped with top class facilities: Atishi

“The Delhi government is committed to making this celebration smooth and enjoyable for all participants,” Atishi stated. Each ghat will be equipped with clean water, tents, electricity, restrooms, security personnel, medical facilities, power backup, and CCTV cameras to ensure the safety and comfort of the devotees.

In addition to the logistical arrangements, the Chief Minister stressed the need for heightened cleanliness at the ghats and instructed district magistrates to actively engage with local committees for suggestions regarding the festival preparations.

‘Purvanchali vote bank’ in Delhi

Chhath Puja, celebrated predominantly by ‘Purvanchalis,’ the people from Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh— takes place shortly after Diwali. The festival is marked by rituals involving devotees, especially women, who worship the Sun god and perform the traditional ‘Arghya’ while standing in knee-deep water.

This year’s Chhath Puja is particularly significant, coinciding with the assembly elections scheduled for February. The ‘Purvanchali’ voter demographic is anticipated to play a pivotal role in influencing the outcomes for various candidates, further underscoring the importance of this festival in the political landscape of Delhi.
