New Delhi: AAP minister Saurabh Bhardwaj was detained as he was staging a demonstration in support of fired bus marshals in Delhi on Thursday night.

Hundreds of bus marshals who were sacked a year ago were holding the protest near the residence of the Lieutenant Governor (LG) of Delhi VK Saxena. They were demanding reinstatement of their jobs. AAP MLAs, including Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj, Dilip Pandey, Sanjeev Jha and Kuldeep Kumar, were backing the protesters at the protest site.

Delhi LG VK Saxena terminated the services of bus marshals in October last year. As per a resolution passed in recent Delhi Assembly Session, AAP and BJP leaders were to meet the LG on the marshals’ issue.

Bhardwaj said that on September 26, AAP and BJP MLAs passed a resolution in the Assembly to reinstate the bus marshals. “It was decided that on October 3, BJP and AAP MLAs will go to LG and tell him that if any file requires the signature of a minister or CM, then we will do it.”

The minister added that these people (bus marshals) are poor and the responsibility of their families rests on their shoulders. “They are facing problem of paying rent, children’s fees and ration,” he pointed out.

‘Conspiracy orchestrated by BJP and LG’

Before being detained, he said so many police have been called, and an attempt is being made to scare the bus marshals. “LG doesn’t have the morality to meet the bus marshals and to top it all, he has ordered deployment of police force.”

He said, “Today, the BJP’s MLAs are missing, and the people of Delhi have come to know that the employees who were dismissed from various departments are part of a conspiracy orchestrated by the BJP and the LG.”

Earlier in the day, AAP also accused the BJP of taking a U-turn on the reinstatement of former bus marshals in Delhi. BJP and their LG should stop this “cheap politics” and reinstate Delhi’s bus marshals immediately, AAP said.

Last month, Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, who was then a cabinet minister, shot off a letter to Delhi LG VK Saxena, urging him to restore the jobs of bus marshals.
