Well, what if we tell you that there’s more to it? Morgan Freeman, best known for films such as Seven, The Dark Knight, Now You See Me, and Lucy, has a reason to wear those earrings and it’s quite morbid.
For Morgan Freeman, these gold hoop earrings are not just for the bling but there is more to it. Let’s delve into more details!
Why does Morgan Freeman wear gold hoop earrings?
The actor once revealed in a 2019 Instagram post that the gleaming gold hoops are just enough for someone to “buy me a coffin if I die in a strange place”. Morgan Freeman, who is a cinematic legend, is rarely seen without those gold hoops and it has now become a part of his personality.
In the 2019 Instagram post, he revealed that even sailors and pirates, back in the day, used to wear gold earrings as a sea-bound safety net. The idea was if they died far from home or while battling, the value of their earnings would cover the cost of their funeral. And for the same reason, Freeman also wears gold earrings. Simple!
If you are wondering where the idea came from? Then let us tell you that it was inspired by the 1952 pirate movie, The Crimson Pirate, starring Burt Lancaster, who sported similar earrings.
Morgan even talked about it and shared that when he was a kid, he saw the movie and thought that it was “sexy”. He then learned that sailors used to wear gold earrings to “pay for the funeral if they died in a foreign land”. Calling himself a sailor, he added that he “nailed it”.
