New Delhi: James McAvoy, known for his role as Professor X in the X-Men franchise, could have had an entirely different career trajectory. The actor recently revealed that he was offered a prominent role in the renowned Harry Potter movie franchise. Why did James McAvoy decline the offer? What role was he approached with? Here is what we know.

On the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the actor was asked which franchise – Harry Potter or Star Wars – would he like to be a part of, if he could. James McAvoy revealed that at the beginning of his career, he was offered the role of young Voldemort or Tom Riddle in the first instalment, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Although it was a small role, it eventually became an important character in the story.
James McAvoy said that he auditioned for the role and was put on a retainer basis by the makers of the film. He further added that, at that time, the makers offered him approximately a huge amount of 40,000 pounds. He explained that he had hardly done any movies at the time of the offer. As for a reason for declining the offer, James McAvoy said that he refused to accept the role because of how much time it would have required. After this, Tiffin Fiennes took on the role of young Tome Riddle in the Harry Potter movies.

The filming of Harry Potter’s first movie began in September 2000. By this time, James McAvoy was five years into his acting career. He made his debut with the film 1995 film, The Near Room. James was last seen in the 2024 movie, Speak No Evil. His other well-known films include It Chapter Two, the X-Men franchise, Split, and Becoming Jane, among others.
