New Delhi: Manchester United have reportedly shown interest in Sverre Nypan, a 17-year-old midfielder from Norway. Currently, Nypan plays for the Norwegian club Rosenborg and has made 54 first-team appearances, scoring 11 times and making ten assists. It has been reported that United are trying to accelerate the signing of Nypan.
According to media sources, the recent Nypan’s recent season has prompted them to sign a deal with him by January 2025 so that no other club can swoop him away. A deal with the midfielder will align with United’s recent policy of bringing in young, promising talents to their talent. They have been signing players like Leny Yoro, Chido Obi Martin and Sekou Kone throughout the summer.
Nypan’s ever-growing reputation has gained interest from many clubs in Europe, and experts have already started drawing parallels to Martin Odegaard, who signed with Real Madrid at 16 after an impressive stint with Stromsgodset.

Since qualifying for the senior Rosenborg team in 2022, Nypan has been making everyone notice his talent. This season, he has grown as a player, with five goals and six assists from just 20 games. His strength is his versatility, which allows him to play both in the central midfield, as a deep-lying playmaker, as a winger and in a more advanced attacking role.
His exploits this season include a hat trick against Lillestrom SK, which was a pure exhibition of Nypan’s confidence and his ability to decide the course of the game from the midfield. With each game, he is becoming one of the brightest prospects in the Nordic football scenario.
Nypan’s comparison with Odegaard was obvious once he started following a route map similar to that of the Arsenal captain. However, Rosenborg manager Kjetil Rekdal had other views and felt that, in some areas, the Norway midfielder was better than Odegaard and was more of a complete package. Despite missing the first few games of the 2023 season, Nypan looked in great touch once he returned, scoring the first goal for his side in a 3-2 defeat to Glimt. He finished his first complete league season with five goals.
Road to Manchester United
🚨🗣️ Sverre Halseth Nypan: “It would obviously be a dream come true to play for Manchester United. I’m aware United has shown some interest. But I’m quite adamant that I don’t want to open that door yet. I want to focus on Rosenborg, and not think too far ahead.” #MUFC… https://t.co/KsWR0XGPA3

Amazingly, Nypan seems in no hurry to take his big step in the world of football. Despite all the attention he is receiving in European football, he signed a contract last year with Rosenberg until 2026. Mikael Dorsin, Rosenberg’s current manager, feels that Nypan is delivering at a level that is also making his financial value rise.
Having expressed his admiration for Man United last year, Nypan’s linking with the Premier League club is of little surprise. United’s sporting director, Dan Ashworth, has engineered Nypan’s transfer strategy to from Rosenberg. Under Ashworth, the strategy has been to search for young talents proactively before their value rises.
The strategy of not paying an inflated price for young, identifiable talents helped them acquire exciting youngsters in the transfer period, and Nypan will be the next line. The plan is to sign in January 2025 and then loan him back to Rosenberg for the rest of the season to ensure Nypan is nurtured properly without intrusions.
What Nypan’s playing lacks
Nypan’s style of playing and 12 goal contribution have helped Rosenberg collect 40 points from 24 games and are currently placed fifth in the Eliteserien. For all Nypan’s strengths, his style of playing still needs to be improved. His decision-making skills in the final third lack consistency, and he is known for picking up wrong passes and going for the goal instead of giving it to his teammates in a better position. His finishing still isn’t of the highest quality, and he often rushes his execution.
His goal-scoring would double if he were to work on his shooting skills. It isn’t about the technique in his case; it is more about holding his nerve. This will be something that will come with experience and over time. He also has a tendency to hold onto the ball for more extended periods, and his strength makes him prone to going for longer runs.
For now, United does have a great talent in hand, scheduled to arrive at Old Trafford as they look to invest more in the club’s future and seek long-term prospects. As for Nypan, he will be joining some talented players who will be groomed to become an integral part of the team. Currently, United look to be still searching for their former glory, with the rise of stars like Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho igniting hope for the future, with Nypan definitely being critical to a long-term plan.
