The best time to visit Nicaragua is during the dry season, from December to April. The weather will be warm with little to no rain. Keep in mind that Leon is hot all year round, with temperatures ranging from 23°C to 35°C (74°F to 94°F). There’s no shade on the hike up Cerro Negro, so you’ll be in the sun all day. Don’t forget to bring:

  • A hat
  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses

What to expect when volcano boarding in Nicaragua

The Hike Up: Hiking up Cerro Negro near Leon takes about 45 minutes. It’s not too difficult, but it’s uphill, hot, and windy. You can take breaks whenever needed, but be sure to wear sturdy shoes because the ground is covered in gravel. The views from the top are stunning, and the tour includes 30 minutes to walk around the summit and take photos.
