Telangana High Court on Tuesday issued clarification on the issue of Ganesh idol immersion in the Hussain Sagar lake on Tank Bund and reiterated that only eco-friendly and clay idols should be immersed in the water body while Plaster of Paris (PoP) idols should be immersed in artificial water ponds set up by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).
The court rejected the petition of lawyer M Venu Madhav, who said that the GHMC is in contempt of court and did not implement the high court order issued in 2021. The court said that there is not enough evidence to show contempt of court and that he could file another plea if he had complete evidence.
The court also asked the petitioner why the plea was filed so late if the rules were violated in 2022, 2023 as well.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday morning, Hyderabad Police and GHMC put up banners on Tank Bund preventing the immersion of Ganesh idols in the Hussain Sagar lake, citing orders of Telangana High Court. Huge iron fences were also erected around Hussain Sagar to prevent the immersions.
The GHMC has set up 73 artificial ponds across the city to immerse Ganesh idols made of Plaster of Paris and among them are 27 artificial ponds, 24 portable ponds and 22 excavation ponds.
