Telangana: 10-year-old girl in Karimnagar district dies from dengue

In a tragic incident, a 10-year-old girl from Huzurabad, Karimnagar district of Telangana died from dengue while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Hanmakonda on Monday, September 30.

The girl was suffering from fever for a week and was admitted to a local hospital and then administered medication at home, her father R Venkateswarlu said. Her condition worsened over the next few days and on the advise of a local doctor, she was admitted a private hospital in Hanmakonda, Deccan Chronicle reported.

After running tests, doctors diagnosed her with Dengue but her platelets dropped soon after and led to her tragic demise.

Dengue cases in 2024 surpasses that of last year:

The number of dengue cases recorded in Telangana in 2024 stood at 8,027, surpassing the number of cases recorded in 2023, which was 8,016.

The peak season of dengue usually lasts from June to September, but doctors expect the numbers to rise till October. Dengue is caused by breeding of mosquitoes in stagnant water and typically occurs during rainy season.

Dengue cases increase every three to four years because of changing strains. The last major peak in 2019, saw a caseload of over 13,000.

Doctors say that the peak happens every time the virus strain mutates into a more aggressive version and starts spreading quickly.

In August, at least three fatalities were seen from the virus, including two four-year-old girls and a pregnant woman.
