New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday (October 17) refused to stay the oath taking ceremony of the Nayab Singh Saini-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Haryana and warned the petitioner of imposing costs for filing such a plea.

The plea seeking to stay the oath taking ceremony was mentioned for urgent hearing before a bench comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra at the start of the proceedings on Thursday.

Petition was mentioned before CJI-headed bench for urgent hearing

The petition, which sought a direction to the Election Commission of India (ECI) to conduct re-poll in Haryana’s 20 assembly seats, was mentioned before the bench before the start of the oath taking ceremony of the Nayab Singh Saini-led BJP government in Haryana.

How can we restrain elected government from taking oath, apex court asked petitioner

“Do you want us to stall the oath taking of an elected government? We are putting you on guard. We will impose costs. Circulate the papers. We will see,” CJI Chandrachud told the petitioner when the plea was mentioned for urgent hearing and asked “How can we restrain the elected government from taking oath.”
