Maharashtra cabinet has passed a proposal to award Bharat Ratna to Ratan Tata, who died on Wednesday night. Earlier, Shinde faction leader Rahool Kanal had made this demand. Rahool Kanal had written a letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
Mumbai: Maharashtra cabinet has passed a resolution asking the Centre to honour Ratan Tata with the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award. This request was made by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena on Thursday, a day after Ratan Tata’s death on Wednesday night.
Shiv Sena leader Rahool Kanal had written to CM Shinde, urging him to propose Ratan Tata’s name for the Bharat Ratna.
Proposal letter sent to Centre
In his letter, Kanal said that Ratan Tata was not only a visionary business leader but also a compassionate humanitarian. He pointed out Tata’s philanthropic efforts, including his work for the welfare of stray animals and his role in building cancer hospitals for the underprivileged. Kanal explained that Tata’s efforts helped those in need, providing shelter through his hotels and ensuring access to healthcare for the poor.
Kanal’s letter described Ratan Tata as a person who embodied values like kindness, integrity, and selfless service. He said that the Bharat Ratna would be a well-deserved tribute for such an iconic figure, whose impact went beyond business and deeply touched the lives of countless people across India.

Following this request, the Maharashtra cabinet, led by Chief Minister Shinde, along with his deputies Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, paid tribute to Ratan Tata by observing a minute of silence in his honor.
Ratan Tata’s demise
Ratan Tata passed away late Wednesday at the age of 86 after battling a brief illness. He had been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai on Monday, following a sudden drop in blood pressure. His condition worsened, and he was in the intensive care unit until he died.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed his deep sorrow over Tata’s death, calling him a national icon and saying that his contributions to the country would always be remembered. CM Shinde also announced that Ratan Tata’s last rites would be conducted with full state honors, a mark of respect for his extraordinary contributions to India.
As a further tribute to the beloved industrialist, Tata’s body has been kept at NCPA (National Centre for the Performing Arts) in Mumbai, allowing the public to pay their final respects.
Ratan Tata, the Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons, was one of India’s most respected and influential industrialists. Under his leadership, the Tata Group grew into a global powerhouse, known for its ethical business practices and commitment to corporate social responsibility.
Beyond his business accomplishments, Ratan Tata was admired for his philanthropic efforts. He was deeply involved in numerous charitable initiatives, including supporting education, healthcare, and rural development.
