New Delhi: A Manipulative child can be very challenging to deal with at times, and it can be due to many reasons that the child has adopted such skills as lack of attention, miscommunication, inconsistent rules and consequences, control or insecurity. Children can manoeuvre or be manipulative for a variety of reasons. It could result from feeling they won’t be heard, being stubborn and rigid about what they want, experiencing manipulation as the only way to get things done by the adults around them, being in neglectful or abusive environments, learning these patterns from adults around them, to also consuming such ways of interacting or responding from the media they consume.
As a parent, it becomes very important for them to understand the core from which it is coming and resolve it so that manipulation ends or is treated it in the right way without going harsh on kids. It is also an important role to play in tackling the situation with the right solutions to help the kid. Dr Kamna Chibber, Clinical Psychologist shares various ways by which one can easily deal with kids and help build a strong connection to communicate and understand the main reason behind it.
Dr Kamna says, If you know or interact with children who are manipulative the following aspects can help communicate with them:
- Be precise about what you are seeking to speak of
- Don’t get lost in the emotions that may be brought forth
- Ensure that you respond to what is being said and not how it is being said
- Seek clarification if you feel there are inconsistencies
- An aggressive way of responding can reinforce the same pattern
- Reassure that you understand and be patient
- Be positively reinforcing the good parts to strengthen those
- Avoid being too harsh, negative or punitive or characterizing them as being a certain type of person
