Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light shortlisted for Oscars but there’s a catch

Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light garnered an eight-minute standing ovation at its world premiere in Cannes 2024 earlier this year. It was the first Indian production to compete at the prestigious film festival in thirty years. Read further to know more.

New Delhi: After making India proud at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, All We Imagine As Light is now eyeing victory at the 96th Academy Awards. You will be amazed to know that the Payal Kapadia directorial has reportedly been shortlisted for the Oscars 2025. But, there’s a twist.

According to an ndtv.com report, the drama film has been shortlisted by France to represent the country. For the unversed, the award-winning movie was a collaboration between Indian and French production houses.

Co-producer Zico Maitra told the media outlet that All We Imagine As Light has also been submitted for Academy Awards selection in India. He expressed that it would be a great honour to represent India at the Oscars 2025.

All We Imagine As Light at Cannes 2024

Payal Kapadia made history at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival when All We Imagine As Light won the prestigious Grand Prix award, making it the first Indian film in three decades and the first ever by an Indian female director, to compete in the festival’s main category.

All We Imagine As Light is set against the backdrop of a bustling city. Its storyline revolves around Prabha, a nurse whose life takes an unexpected turn when she receives a mysterious gift from her separated husband. Together with her roommate Anu, they embark on a journey to a coastal town, where the forest becomes a sanctuary for their dreams.

Jointly produced by France’s Petit Chaos and India’s Chalk and Cheese Films, the flick marked Payal’s feature film debut. It starred Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Chhaya Kadam, Hridhu Haroon and Azees Nedumangad in pivotal roles.
