

From May 1 to September 30, these advanced surveillance systems flagged a total of 8 million traffic violations, translating to an average of 57,942 infractions per day, or 789 violations at each junction. The peak violation times were identified during the morning rush, particularly between 8 AM and 9 AM, when violations surged to 9,134 and 8,265, respectively. The statistics reveal that wrong-way driving is the most prevalent infraction, accounting for about 2,300 cases daily. Other frequent violations include running red lights, ignoring stop lines, and failing to use seat belts or helmets.
Police stations reporting highest number of violations:
Certain police stations reported the highest rates of violations, including Adugodi, Banashankari, Basavanagudi, Halasur, Jayanagara, Malleswaram, Mico Layout, R.T. Nagar, Sadashivanagar, V.V. Puram. Presently, over 50 junctions across Bengaluru are under continuous monitoring by AI cameras, which facilitate the issuance of electronic challans through the Smart Enforcement Centre. Utilizing cutting-edge technology, these cameras effectively monitor and document violations.
In addition to AI surveillance, Bengaluru’s traffic police are leveraging Field Traffic Violations Report (FTVR) machines to record infractions without direct contact. As of August 2024, these machines have logged 1.43 crore violations, with January alone accounting for 50 lakh, averaging around 67,335 violations each day.
Significant road safety crisis in Bengaluru
The troubling data underscores a significant road safety crisis. Over the past six years, Bengaluru has recorded 27,800 road accidents, both fatal and non-fatal. This year, as of July, there were 2,419 non-fatal and 497 fatal accidents. Since 2018, the city has reported a total of 4,819 fatal accidents, with 2023 seeing the highest figure at 5,998 cases. J
The traffic police have identified Devanahalli Airport, K.R. Pura, Kamakshipalya, Peenya, Yelahanka as the top five accident-prone areas in the city, indicating an urgent need for enhanced safety measures and public awareness to combat this rising trend in traffic violations and accidents.
