No license, insect infestations..! Iconic Hyderabad clubs under food safety concerns

In a crackdown on food safety, officials inspected Hyderabad’s historic Nizam Club and Fateh Maidan Club, discovering serious hygiene issues. The Nizam Club lacked a valid FSSAI license and essential documentation, such as Medical Fitness Certificates and Pest Control Records.

Hyderabad: In a significant crackdown on food safety violations, officials inspected two prominent Hyderabad clubs, revealing alarming deficiencies in food handling and hygiene practices. The inspections targeted the historic Nizam Club, established in 1884 by Nawab Mahbub Ali Khan, and the Fateh Maidan Club at LB Stadium. During the inspection at the Nizam Club, officials found that the food services were operating without a valid Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) license. Essential documentation was notably absent, including Medical Fitness Certificates for food handlers, Pest Control Records, and a Water Analysis Report for the reverse osmosis (RO) water used in food preparation.

The kitchen conditions were particularly concerning, with inspectors uncovering live cockroach infestations, leaks from the ceiling, and broken refrigerator doors. Other hygiene issues included rusted joints, clogged drains, and stagnant water. Furthermore, food items were improperly stored, lacking proper labeling, and inspectors discovered a beetle infestation in both wheat flour and urad dal. A shocking revelation came when the Food Business Operator admitted to using synthetic food colors in Chinese dishes and cosmetic rose water in pudding preparation; these items were promptly discarded by the officials.

Fateh Maidan Club also under FSSAI’s scrutiny

Simultaneously, the Fateh Maidan Club faced its own set of violations. Inspections revealed open dustbins, windows without insect-proof screens, greasy walls, uneven floors with broken tiles, and uncovered and unlabelled food items in the refrigerator. The kitchen staff were found without appropriate attire, such as hair caps, gloves, and aprons. Similar to the Nizam Club, the Fateh Maidan Club also lacked Medical Fitness Certificates and Water Analysis Reports, and failed to display a valid FSSAI license.

Recent raids on pan shops in Nacharam, Mallapur

These inspections follow a recent evaluation conducted on September 21, when the food safety task force assessed several paan shops in the Nacharam and Mallapur areas. Alarmingly, four out of five of these establishments were found to be operating without valid FSSAI registrations, highlighting a significant concern regarding hygiene and waste disposal practices across the region.

The task force’s findings underscore the urgent need for adherence to food safety regulations to ensure public health and safety in food establishments throughout Hyderabad.
