J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah
Srinagar: In a move aimed at prioritising public comfort, newly sworn-in Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of Jammu and Kashmir has instructed the local police to minimise disruptions during VIP movements.
Addressing the issue in his inaugural directive, Abdullah emphasised a people-friendly approach, discouraging “stick waving” and “aggressive gestures” and the use of sirens during his travel.
“I have spoken to the DG, Jammu and Kashmir police, that there is to be no ‘green corridor’ or traffic stoppage when I move anywhere by road. I have instructed him to minimise public inconvenience & the use of sirens is to be minimal. The use of any stick waving or aggressive gestures is to be totally avoided,” Abdullah wrote on X.

He also urged his cabinet colleagues to adopt a similar ethos, reinforcing the idea that their role is to serve the people rather than disrupt their daily lives. “I’m asking my cabinet colleagues to follow the same example. In everything our conduct must be people-friendly. We are here to serve the people & not to inconvenience them,” he added.
Omar Abdullah took his oath of office at the Sheri-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC) in Srinagar, with Lieutenant Governor Manoj Saxena officiating the ceremony. Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations, promising that the central government would collaborate closely with Abdullah for the development of Jammu and Kashmir. “Congratulations to Omar Abdullah Ji on taking oath as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. Wishing him the very best in his efforts to serve the people. The Centre will work closely with him and his team for J-K’s progress,” Modi stated.
Reflecting on his unique position, Abdullah noted, “I was the last chief minister to serve a full six-year term, and now I’ll be the first chief minister of the Union Territory of J-K. While I am pleased with the former, I recognize that being a CM of a Union Territory presents its own challenges. I hope this status is temporary, and we can work together with the central government to address the people’s issues, starting with restoring statehood to J-K.”
In addition to Abdullah, several ministers were sworn in, including National Conference MLAs Javed Ahmed Rana, Javid Ahmad Dar, Sakina Itoo, and Surinder Kumar Chowdhary. The National Conference party secured 42 seats in the recent assembly elections.
