Demolition drive begins along the Musi river in Hyderabad.
Home demolitions began in the Musi riverbed in Shankar Nagar Basti under Malakpet limits in the city on Tuesday, tv9 telugu reported.
Some old women could be heard pleading with officials to take out their belongings before the demolition.
Civil society groups demand rehabilitation on priority:
The residents of the houses, which are being demolished, have reportedly evacuated voluntarily and they are being rehabilitated to two bedroom houses. Vehicles were reportedly arranged to transport the belongings of the residents.
An official from the revenue department said that all families were happy to shift and give consent.
On Monday, officials said that 163 families had been relocated to the two bhk homes provided by the government. Civil society groups demanded the government to prioritise rehabilitation over demolitions on the Musi riverbed.
KTR hits out at Congress, BJP:
Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president KT Rama Rao visited and interacted with the residents of Musi catchment area in Tulsi Ram Nagar, Golnaka Division, Amberpet Constituency and asked if BJP and Congress are working together to make poor peoples lives miserable.
The meeting was attended by hundreds of basti residents, who spoke to KTR on the difficulties they faced.
Speaking at the meeting, KTR said, “You voted for Kishan Reddy in Amberpet. Where has he gone? Kishan Reddy and Revanth Reddy have united. You have to stay united and resist when they demolish homes with police security. We will stand with you and fight against the government.”
Activists also have been demanding justice for people getting displaced because of the Musi River Development project.
Congress government ministers accused BRS leaders of stoking fears in the public with their rhetoric.
