Mumbai: The road connectivity in Mumbai is soon going to get a big push as the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has launched a Rs 58,000 crore plan to build a network of ring roads around the city. The project aims to reduce traffic congestion, reduce travel time and enhance Mumbai’s transportation system.
Blueprint of the plan
A 90-kilometer network of roads, bridges, and tunnels will be built as part of the project, forming a connected transportation system around Mumbai. This network will surround the city and allow easy access to bordering regions such as Gujarat border in the north, Konkan Maharashtra in the south, and Western Maharashtra, as per a report by The Indian Express.
The project’s focus is on seven outer and inner ring roads, which are currently being planned and in different stages of development. These roads are strategically designed to provide seamless connectivity, aligning with MMRDA’s goal of making Mumbai a city where travel times are under an hour.
MMRDA Commissioner told Indian Express that by ‘Mumbai in minutes’ we mean that to travelling from one end of the city to another should not take more than 59 minutes.
Major projects and roads under construction
1. Versova-Bandra Sea Link
2. Mira Bhayander-Dahisar Link Road
3. Alibaug-vihar Multi Modal Corridor
4. Vadodara-Mumbai Expressway
These roads will form a complete ring surrounding Mumbai, incorporating sea links, tunnels, and elevated bridges to offer multiple routes for both daily travellers and commercial traffic.
In addition to MMRDA, other development authorities like Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will work hand in hand to build the ring road network.
The Ring Road Project and the Coastal Road together are expected to reduce the traffic congestion in Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and improve public transportation access.
