Mumbai: The financial capital of the country is all set to launch its first underground subway line, known as the Aqua Line, early next month. The new Aqua Line Metro route stretches across Mumbai, covering major areas and reducing congestion on the city’s bustling streets. This is a pivotal moment for the city’s transport infrastructure, as it aims to tackle the longstanding issue of traffic congestion with this advanced metro system.
Mumbai, one of the most populated cities globally, constantly struggles with traffic jams and road accidents, leading to significant daily inconvenience. The introduction of the Mumbai Aqua Line promises to ease this burden by significantly cutting down commute times for thousands of daily travellers. This project showcases the city’s growing infrastructural capacity, with several ongoing construction projects, of which the Mumbai Metro Aqua Line is one of the most ambitious.
Aqua Line Route and Stations
The Aqua Line Metro route will span across Cuffe Parade to Aarey Depot, with a total of 27 stops, 26 of which will be underground stations. Phase one of the line will commence operations on October 04, linking the city’s western suburbs. The second phase, connecting central Mumbai to the Island City, is expected to follow shortly. The Mumbai Metro Aqua Line will enhance connectivity across the city, offering commuters a faster and more reliable alternative to road travel.
Key stations along the route include:
Cuffe Parade, Vidhan Bhavan, Churchgate, Hutatma Chowk, CST Metro, Kalbadevi, Girgaon, Grant Road, Mumbai Central Metro, Mahalaxmi, Science Museum, Acharya Atre Chowk, Worli, Siddhivinayak, Dadar, Shitladevi, Dharavi, BKC, Vidyanagri, Santacruz, Domestic Airport, International Airport, Marol Naka, MIDC, SEEPZ, and Aarey Depot.
Aqua Line Timings and Speed
The Aqua Line Metro will operate daily from 6:30 am to 11 pm, with trains running at regular intervals. The trains, equipped with modern amenities, can reach speeds of up to 90 km/hr, offering a rapid and comfortable mode of transport. This system will drastically reduce commute times, providing a much-needed solution to Mumbai’s traffic woes.
Mumbai Aqua Line
The Mumbai Aqua Line is expected to transform the city’s transit system by using state-of-the-art technology, enhancing connectivity and reducing travel times significantly. Commuters can expect the 35-km stretch to be covered in just 50 minutes, a substantial improvement from the two-hour car journey over the same distance. This is a major milestone for Mumbai, showcasing how the city is embracing modern technology to address longstanding transport issues.
Aqua Line Budget
The Aqua Line Metro project was first greenlit by the central government in June 2013 with an initial budget of Rs 23,136 crore. However, due to several factors, the total project cost has risen to Rs 37,276 crore. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) played a crucial role in funding this ambitious project, helping Mumbai realise its vision of a faster and more efficient metro system.
The Aqua Line will be managed and maintained by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) for the next ten years. The DMRC will handle everything from station operations and train control to overall maintenance and passenger safety, ensuring that the system runs smoothly and efficiently for all users.
