Mumbai: The much-anticipated Metro-3 project in Mumbai is about to become a reality, with the first phase set to open soon, connecting Aarey JVLR to the bustling business center of BKC (Bandra Kurla Complex). After years of planning and construction, the Metro line has received the final nod from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS), making way for its commercial operations.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will officially inaugurate the new metro line with a flag-off ceremony on Saturday, signaling the beginning of regular services the following day.
Final approvals and inspections
S K Gupta, Director of Projects at Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL), confirmed that all necessary approvals have been secured, ensuring the project’s timely launch. The final inspection was conducted by Janak Kumar Garg, Commissioner of Rail Safety (CRS) and Chief Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety, a seasoned officer of the Indian Railway Service of Electrical Engineers (IRSEE).
What is poised to change with the new line?
The 12.44-kilometer Metro stretch will feature nine trains operating daily, offering a total of 96 trips from 6:30 AM to 10:30 PM on weekdays, with weekend services starting at 8:30 AM. Commuters can purchase tickets either via a dedicated app or using paper-based QR codes, with fares ranging from Rs 10 to Rs 50.
This new Metro line is expected to be a game-changer for Mumbai commuters, slashing travel time between Aarey-JVLR and BKC to just 22 minutes, compared to the current 40-60 minutes by road. Additionally, an interchange at Marol Naka will allow passengers to switch seamlessly between Metro-3 and Metro-1, improving connectivity across the city.
Prime Minister to inaugurate several big projects
On Saturday, in addition to riding the first Metro-3 train, Prime Minister Modi will also lay the foundation stones for several key infrastructure projects. Among them is the Thane Integral Ring Metro Rail Project, which recently received state approval, and the construction of a new Thane Municipal Headquarters.
A large public event is planned to mark the occasion, with around 40,000 attendees expected at Walavalkar Ground in Thane. Organisers have arranged transportation and parking for the crowd, including provisions for nearly 1,200 buses and private vehicles.
