Mumbai: A man reportedly jumped off the Atal Setu bridge, part of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, after leaving his car parked there on Monday morning, said the Mumbai Police. The incident took place around 10 am in Sewri. After the incident was reported, police launched a search and rescue operation for the man.

The man drove his red Maruti Brezza to the bridge, parked it near a sign, and then jumped into the sea. The vehicle is registered on the name of a person named Sushant Chakravarti. A bystander saw the incident and informed the authorities.

Search operation underway

Teams from both the Sewri police and the coastal police quickly reached the spot and started searching for the man. “We received information from the traffic department, after which teams were sent to the scene to locate the man,” said Senior Police Inspector Rohit Khot.

A team of police and coast guards have been deployed to rescue Chakravarty.

Wife claims ‘tremendous work pressure’ behind move

The police searched Chakravarty’s vehicle and discovered his identity. The cops found out that the man lives in Parel area of the city with his wife and daughter. “We called them to the police station and during the inquiry, Chakravarty’s wife told us that he was under tremendous work pressure,” said Khot.

Sewri police is currently probing the case. The cops have have also examined Chakravarty’s mobile phone, but have not found anything substantial yet. Police added that Chakravarty was working at a public sector bank as a manager in Fort. Police added that he also took his family out for travel to Lonavala over the weekend. On Monday, he told his wife that he was leaving for work. However, he went to Atal Setu and jumped off the bridge, said Khot.

The Atal Setu, officially called the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri-Nhava Sheva Atal Setu, is a bridge that connects south Mumbai to Navi Mumbai. It opened in January this year. The bridge is six lanes wide and stretches 21.8 kilometers, with 16.5 kilometers over the sea.
