Meta has introduced Movie Gen, an AI tool that creates short videos and audio clips from text prompts, just like its rivals tools like OpenAI’s Sora.
Meta Introduces Movie Gen: A New AI Tool for Text-to-Video Generation
Earlier, OpenAI’s Sora made the headlines despite the fact it there is still a long way to reach users. The sole reason is its ability to create AI videos with just a text prompt. Soon, Google has also introduced a similar kind of tool. Now, Instagram and Facebook’s parent company, Meta has introduced a new AI tool called Movie Gen, which allows users to generate short videos and audio clips by simply typing out prompts. The release puts Meta in direct competition with Google, OpenAI, and others in the growing field of AI-generated video tools.
How does Movie Gen work? Movie Gen lets users create videos that can last up to 16 seconds. The tool also generates background music and sound effects that match the content of the video. Users can provide simple text prompts, and the AI generates a video based on those instructions. For example, Meta showcased a video where Movie Gen was able to turn a parking lot scene into one with splashing puddles.
More Than Just Text-To-Video Tool
Moreover, Meta’s Movie Gen can also use personal photos to create animated videos of people doing activities like painting or running. Another unique feature is that Movie Gen can personalise videos by using real images or videos of people. It can create videos that preserve the identity and movements of the person, ensuring the results look realistic. It can add objects, change backgrounds, and even alter the style of the video to make it more interesting. This level of customisation makes it stand out from other tools.
When Will You Get It?
Just like the OpenAI’s Sora, Meta has decided not to release Movie Gen to the public just yet. According to Chris Cox, Meta’s Chief Product Officer, the tool is still too expensive to operate, and it takes too long to generate the videos. However, he claims that Meta is working with entertainment and content creators to further improve Movie Gen. Moreover, Meta is aiming to include it in their own platforms, such as Facebook and Instagram, in the future.
For now, Meta is not planning to make the tool widely available to developers, unlike its Llama language models. The company wants to ensure Movie Gen is fully refined before any larger release.
