New Delhi: England defeated West Indies by 5 wickets in the second ODI at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua on November 3, Sunday. England’s skipper Liam Livingstone scored a dashing century and chased a mammoth score of 328 runs. England won the toss and elected to bowl first and the bowlers proved their skipper’s decision right by getting out the Caribbean openers cheaply.
Josh Turner removed both openers but after the early blows, West Indies skipper Shai Hope and Keacy Carty handled the inning and made a century stand for third wicket. Adil Rashid broke the partnership but after that Caribbean power-hitters stormed the West Indies innings to a flying score.
Hope scored his record 17th century in ODIs and now he has made the third most hundreds for West Indies in ODIs after Chris Gayle and Brian Lara. Sherfane Rutherford scored a half-century in just 35 balls and Shimron Hetmyer also gave the finishing touches and took West Indies innings to 328/6 in 50 overs.
In response, England also lost an early wicket. Philip Salt and Jacob Bethell made great half-centuries with almost a strike rate of 100. West Indies were controlling the second innings until Liam Livingstone came into the crease.
England needed almost 100 runs in the last 10 overs, Livingstone and Sam Curran finished the match with 2.3 overs remaining in their innings. This is the first century for the English skipper Livingstone in ODIs and came in the right cause with the series on the line. Curran also scored 52 runs in 52 balls and gave great support to the skipper.
The second-highest chase in West Indies ever
It was also the second-highest chase in West Indies conditions. The highest-ever chase in Caribbean conditions was also registered with England as the English team chased down the target of 364 runs in 2019.
