New Delhi: The Congress on Tuesday named Priyanka Gandhi as party candidate from Wayanad constituency in Kerala, which will go on by-poll for Lok Sabha Elections on November 13. The results will be announced on November 23 along with that of bypolls in other constituencies and Assembly Elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand.
The by-poll was necessitated in the constituency after Rahul Gandhi decided to vacate the seat after winning both from Wayanad and Raebareli in the Lok Sabha polls. While the Congress had already named her as party candidate earlier, her name was officially announced on Tuesday.
Why bypoll got necessitated in Wayanad
In the Lok Sabha elections held in June this year, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi contested from two seats. One of these was the Wayanad seat while the other was the Rae Bareli seat of UP. He won a both the seats with a large number of . In such a situation, he was necessary for him to leave one seat. Hre had then decided to leave Wayanad but also promised to field a member of his family.

In the Lok Sabha elections held earlier this year, Rahul Gandhi decided to contest from Raebareli instead of Amethi. The Raebareli seat was left vacant after after Sonia Gandhi became a Rajya Sabha MP. She had been an MP from this seat four timed between 2004 to 2024. This seat is also considered to be the traditional seat of the Gandhi family.
Congress names two more candidates for bypolls
Apart from Priyanka Gandhi for Wayanad Lok Sabha bypolls, the Congress fielded Rahul Mamkootathil from Palakkad constituency, while Ramya Haridas has been fielded from Chelakkara for bypolls in state Assembly. Earlier in the day, the Election Commission had announced bypolls for Wayanad, Lok Sabha seats and 48 Assembly constituencies.
