The police have registered a case of abetment of suicide case and have arrested two men. The police said the government engineer had taken money at exorbitant interest rates.

Bengaluru: The wife of the Karnataka government engineer died by suicide in Holalkere of Chitradurga district due to the alleged harassment by money lenders. According to police, the engineer had borrowed Rs 84 lakh from 12 people and lost the money in IPL cricket betting. The lenders reportedly were torturing the family to return the money. Fed up with the harassment, the woman died by suicide at her residence.
The deceased has been identified as Ranjita (24). She was married to Darshan, a government engineer three years ago. The couple had a two-year-old child from their marriage.
Ranjita was found dead at her residence. Ranjita’s father in his complaint claimed that she died by suicide due to harassment from the money lenders. The incident took place on March 18.
Based on the complaint, the police filed an FIR under IPC section 306 (abetment of suicide). The police have arrested two men who is said to have fought with the couple in their house demanding money.
“Ranjita was found hanging from a ceiling fan. Ranjita’s father Venkatesh has given a complaint. The complainant claims that Ranjita’s husband Darshan, who is a government employee had taken money of Rs 84 lakh from 12 people by giving a blank cheque as the surety. Darshan had borrowed money between 2021-2023 and lost it in IPL betting. The moneylenders were harassing the couple to repay the debt. Fed up with the harassment, the woman is said to have died by suicide,” Chitradurga SP Dharmender Kumar Meena said.
The police investigation found that the accused had lent money at exorbitant interest rates. The police have arrested two men in the case and are looking for others.
