Bengaluru: A 13-year-old girl died by suicide after she was strip-searched by the school teacher on charges of stealing Rs 2,000. The incident took place on March 16 in Kadampur Village of Bagalkot district.
The deceased has been identified as Divya Barker (16), she was studying in eighth standard in the government school.
On March 16, a school teacher named Jayashree claimed that a Rs 2,000 note was missing from her bag. The teacher had suspicion on five students including Divya.
The teacher brought the issue to the notice of headmaster KH Mujawar. Together, they reportedly abused the children and were forced to remove their uniforms for checking.
Upset over the incident, the girl returned home and died by suicide. The girl was found hanging from a ceiling fan.
The family members came to know about the incident in the school when the victim’s elder sister informed them about it.
The victim’s father approached the Bagalkot Rural Police Station and filed a complaint against the school teacher Jayashree and headmaster Mujawar.
Based on the complaint, the police have registered an FIR under IPC section 306 (abetment to suicide). The police are questioning the school staff and the other four children who were reportedly stripped in the name of checking. According to the police, they will summon the two teachers to the police station for further questioning shortly.
The villagers on Tuesday staged a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office demanding action against the two teachers and a compensation of Rs 25 lakh to the family.
