Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday strongly denied any wrongdoing in the allotment of 14 plots of land to his wife by the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA). He called the accusations a “BJP conspiracy” and vowed to fight the case legally, refusing to resign from his position.
The controversy erupted after a special court in Bengaluru ordered an investigation by the Lokayukta police in Mysuru against Siddaramaiah in the MUDA site allotment case. This development has paved the way for a formal investigation and the possibility of registering an FIR against the Chief Minister.
What Siddaramaiah said
Despite the allegations, Siddaramaiah stood firm, saying that he has done nothing wrong and will not step down. “There is no question of resigning because I have done no wrong,” he said. He also questioned why other leaders, such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and JDS leader HD Kumaraswamy, did not resign during past controversies. Siddaramaiah compared his situation to PM Modi’s handling of the Godhra incident, asserting that PM Modi did not step down then, and he sees no reason to do so now.
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, who is also the president of Karnataka Congress, supported Siddaramaiah, dismissing any possibility of resignation. Shivakumar said that the allegations are part of a political conspiracy by the BJP and the JD(S), as they are unable to accept the success of the Congress government’s “five guarantee” schemes, which have been well-received by the public.
BJP leaders demand Siddaramaiah’s resgination
Meanwhile, opposition BJP leaders in Karnataka held a protest in front of the Mahatma Gandhi statue at the Vidhana Soudha, demanding Siddaramaiah’s resignation over the issue.
The legal case against Siddaramaiah took a significant step forward when the special court judge, Santhosh Gajanan Bhat, ordered the Lokayukta police to begin an investigation. This order came after the Karnataka High Court upheld the Governor’s decision to allow the probe into the alleged illegalities in the land allotment.
The controversy centres on allegations that MUDA allotted compensatory plots to Siddaramaiah’s wife, BM Parvathi, in a prime area of Mysuru, which had a much higher property value than the land she originally owned. MUDA had developed a residential layout on Parvathi’s 3.16 acres of land and, under a 50:50 land-sharing scheme, allotted her developed plots in return for her undeveloped land. However, the complaint alleges that Parvathi did not have legal ownership of the original land in question.
The case was filed by RTI activist Snehamayi Krishna of Mysuru, who raised concerns over the legality of the land allotted to Parvathi under this controversial scheme.
