India vs New Zealand: Virat Kohli threw his wicket to a suicidal run out just before stumps on Day 1 of third New Zealand Test.

New Delhi: From a cheeky run out attempt to dismiss New Zealand batter Ish Sodhi to getting recklessly run out himself, it was nothing short of a day of misfortunes for star India player Virat Kohli. Kohli threw his wicket carelessly on the opening day of the third Test match against New Zealand just before stumps were called as India, from a dominant position, were pushed against the wall at end of day’s play.

In reply to New Zealand’s first innings score of 235 all out, the hosts lost the wicket of skipper Rohit Sharma (18) early in the innings. Yashasvi Jaiswal (30) and talented Shubman Gill (31 not out) then took charge of the innings getting back in control with a 53-run partnership for the second wicket but Kiwi spinner Ajaz Patel picked up two wickets in two balls as he accounted for Jaiswal and nightwatchman Mohammed Siraj (0) to give a double bow to India.

Another poor dismissal for Kohli

Virat Kohli (4) threw his wicket to a suicidal run out just before stumps in an attempt to take a single which seemed to be needless considering the team had lost two back-to-back wickets. Kohli made an error of judgement as he was caught well short at the non-striker’s end after Matt Henry pulled off a direct hit resulting in the fourth wicket for India.

Kohli’s cheeky run out attempt

Earlier during New Zealand’s innings, Kohli Kiwi player Sodhi in a cheeky manner but wasn’t successful in his attempt. The incident happened in the 60th over of the innings being bowled by spinner Washington Sundar. On the last ball of the over, Mitchell took a single bringing Sodhi to the striker’s end and at the end of the over, Sodhi left the crease after completing the run. As soon as he left the crease, Kohli took off the bails and appealed to the square leg umpire, who refused to entertain his appeal and gave it not out.

Why was Sodhi given not out despite being out of the crease?

Actually, Sodhi was not given out because when he placed the bat on the crease for the first time, the umpire had signaled the completion of the over. After the umpire did this, Kohli blew the bails and hence the batter was given not out. If the umpire had not signaled an over and the batter had just walked out with his bat on the crease and Kohli had blown the bails, then the batter would have been out.

Meanwhile, Gill (31 not out) and Rishabh Pant (1 not out) were manning the crease at stumps, as the hosts still trailed by 149 runs.
