Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) is set to launch a comprehensive 90-day initiative starting October 2, aimed at boosting groundwater levels and enhancing sewage management throughout the city. The announcement was made by Managing Director Ashok Reddy, who emphasized the program’s focus on addressing persistent water shortages and sewage overflow issues in Hyderabad.
During a workshop with senior officials and local managers, Reddy highlighted that a substantial number of daily complaints received by the board pertain to sewage-related problems. He noted that approximately 40 per cent of these issues could be effectively resolved through improved awareness and better management practices.
Residents suggested to construct rainwater harvesting pits
Reflecting on the challenges faced last summer when the city relied heavily on water tankers due to declining groundwater levels, Reddy also urged residents to construct rainwater harvesting pits as a proactive measure to help alleviate future water scarcity.
Executive Director Mayank Mittal stressed that the public evaluates HMWS&SB’s performance based on its handling of water supply and sewage issues rather than the execution of large-scale projects. Senior officials V.L. Praveen Kumar and Jala Satyanarayana presented strategies and measures for the upcoming campaign, which aims to achieve significant advancements in Hyderabad’s water and sewage systems over the next three months.
Emerging water crisis in Hyderabad
Hyderabad, once celebrated for its dependable water supply, is now confronting a potential drinking water crisis specially during the summer season. The city’s main reservoirs witnesses a significant drop in water levels, exacerbated by inadequate groundwater replenishment resulting from poor rainwater harvesting practices. Consequently, residents are bracing for a challenging summer.
Historically, while certain neighborhoods have experienced water shortages, the overall supply has typically sufficed for the city’s demands. In the recent trends, residents in various neighborhoods, particularly those near the thriving IT corridor, are voicing their frustrations regarding the inconsistent municipal water supply and tanker services. In some areas, even when water is provided, the pressure is so low that it fails to satisfy residents’ needs.
