Heavy rains disrupt normalcy in Mumbai; What does IMD’s weekly forecast say?

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has declared a holiday for all Mumbai schools and colleges due to heavy rainfall. A red alert by the India Meteorological Department warns of worsening conditions in Maharashtra, urging residents to avoid non-essential travel and outdoor activities.

Mumbai: In response to the anticipated heavy rainfall, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges across Mumbai. The closure, set for today, applies to both government and private institutions. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the region, advising residents to avoid non-essential travel and outdoor activities. The IMD warns that the ongoing weather pattern could escalate, leading to dangerous conditions in parts of Maharashtra, including the North Konkan region, where Mumbai is located.

Flights diverted; Major disruptions at Mumbai airport

The severe weather has already caused disruptions in the city, most notably at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. Earlier today, an Indigo flight was forced to abort its landing due to wind shear, diverting the aircraft to Ahmedabad. By late evening, 14 flights bound for Mumbai had been diverted, and more disruptions are expected. SpiceJet has cautioned passengers that both departures and arrivals could face significant delays, advising travelers to check the airline’s website for the latest updates.

Mumbai’s lifeline also affected

Mumbai’s suburban railway system, a critical lifeline for millions of daily commuters, is also grappling with the impact of heavy rainfall. Waterlogged tracks at key stations like Kurla, Bhandup, and Vikhroli have caused delays of up to an hour on the Central Railway (CR) line. Some stations, including Nahur, Kanjurmarg, and Vidyavihar, are bypassing trains due to flooded platforms. On the Western Railway line, cancellations have led to overcrowding at major stations like Churchgate, further complicating the city’s transportation network.

IMDs warning!

As the downpour continues, authorities are warning that the situation may worsen. The IMD forecasts more rain over the next two to three days, with thunderstorm activity expected to intensify. Residents are urged to stay informed, avoid unnecessary travel, and take all necessary precautions to stay safe during this period.
