The AP Disaster Management Agency (APSDMA) has said that the cyclone formed in the southwest Bay of Bengal is moving towards the northwest at a speed of 12 km per hour and it is said to be concentrated at a distance of 360 km from Chennai, 390 km from Puducherry and 450 km from Nellore.
The cyclone is likely to cross the coast between Chennai and Nellore in the early hours of Thursday. Due to the effect of the cyclone, widespread rains are expected in South coastal AP and Rayalaseema and will continue till Thursday, Ronanki Kurmanath, APSDMA MD said.
Heavy rains in NTR, Annamayya districts:
On Tuesday night, heavy rains lashed Annamayya, NTR districts as many areas in low-lying areas of Kadapa were waterlogged. Railway Kodur and Rajampet constituencies recorded the highest rainfall.
Flash floods are likely to occur in Dornala, Ardhaveedu, Peddaravidu, Markapuram, Kambham, Racharla and Mundlamuru mandals in the western region of Prakasam district. The Collector has said that they are prepared with a 30-member NDRF team for emergency relief operations. Control Rooms have been established in district collectorates as well as revenue divisions.
District collectors in Nellore, Anantapur, Sri Sathya Sai districts have also declared holiday for educational institutions for Wednesday, Thursday.
Vehicles damaged in Suryaraopet, Vijayawada:
Many vehicles were damaged after a wall collapsed at the Kamala Nehru Women’s Hostel in Suryaraopet, Vijayawada. The incident was caused by heavy rains in the region.
100 pregnant women moved to hospitals in Prakasam district:
Due to the heavy rain forecast, Prakasam District Collector A Thameem Ansaria asked officials to take steps to prevent loss of life, with a focus on pregnant and lactating women.
She also urged pregnant women with nearby due dates to get admitted in hospitals.
District Medical Officer of Health Suresh Kumar said that 385 pregnant women were identified and 101 women were moved to nearby healthcare centres.
