Harmanpreet Kaur’s future as India’s captain in danger as BCCI set to take final call | Cricket News

For the first time in recent years, the Indian team, under the leadership of Harmanpreet Kaur, failed to cross the group stage hurdle as their wait for an ICC trophy continued.

New Delhi: Harmanpreet Kaur’s future as Indian women’s cricket team skipper looks in danger following the group stage exit from the ongoing T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). India failed to progress to the knockouts after a lacklustre display, losing two out of four matches in Pool B.

For the first time in recent years, the Indian team failed to cross the group stage hurdle as their wait for an ICC trophy continued.

Following the early exit, calls are growing louder to axe Harmanpreet from captaincy duties. Now, according to a report in The Indian Express, The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is all set to take a final call on the future of Harmanpreet.

Time running out for Harmanpreet?

According to the report, BCCI will conduct a meeting with the selection committee and head coach Amol Muzumdar to take a call on Harmanpreet’s future as India skipper. It is understood that all the stakeholders will meet before the squad for the three-match ODIs against New Zealand beginning October 24 is announced.

Harmanpreet, ironically, took charge of India’s T20 captain in 2016 after the team failed to reach the semifinals of the tournament held on home soil.

Under the leadership of Harmanpreet, India have qualified for knockouts in all the World Cup events and even reached the final of the 2020 edition but failed to cross the final hurdle every time. Unlike previous editions, where India cruised through the group stages and faltered in knockouts, in this edition, India started slowly and lost the opener heavily to New Zealand.

Contrasting wins against Pakistan and Sri Lanka were followed by a narrow defeat to Australia. With their fate depending on New Zealand vs Pakistan match on Monday, India hoped for a favour from their neighbours. However, the Kiwis blew away the Women In Green to progress and knock India out of the competition.

While Harmanpreet’s spot as a player remains safe, there is a chance of a few support staff’s getting the axe.

Awestruck and inspired by sports since childhood, I was fortunate enough to earn a living by joining the sports media industry in 2007. It’s been a rollercoaster of a ride ever since. Just like a Bollywood movie, my professional journey, which began 15 years ago, is filled with both happy and sad moments all along with unexpected twists. A cricket buff and football fanatic, I am one of those who love an underdog story. I have had working stints with some of the most prominent media organisations in the country including Zee Sports, Ten Sports, ESPN, NDTV.
