New Delhi: Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir is getting slammed for his coaching tactics which led to the Indian team losing a home Test series after 12 years, with New Zealand ending the home dominance streak. The Tom Latham-led side won their first-ever Test series in India, marking a historic moment in their country’s cricket. Chasing a target of 359 runs, India looked promising with an explosive start but ultimately faltered getting skittled out at 245.
It was back in 2012 that Alastair Cook led England had beat India at home in a Test series, which was under the leadership of MS Dhoni. The next era of Virat Kohli’s captaincy saw India being unbeaten on the home turf and now that Rohit Sharma has taken the reins since 2.5 years, the Indian team has lost a Test series on their own turf. Meanwhile, things aren’t too easy for Gambhir, who was expected to take Indian cricket to newer heights, but as per the fans, this isn’t the kind of start they expected.

Gambhir, who led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to title triumph earlier this year in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as a mentor, was appointed as the head coach of Team India after Rahul Dravid’s stint came to an end post-T20 World Cup 2024 which India clinched. Although Gambhir’s stint started with a T20I series win in Sri Lanka, it was soon balanced when Team India lost the following ODI series to them, after 27 years.
When Bangladesh toured India last month, India swept the Test series 2-0 against them and even the T20I series 3-0. What’s highlighting is that this was “obviously” expected of Team India to win the home series against low weights. India were indeed favourites to win the New Zealand Test series as well due to the long tradition of maintaining home dominance, but the Blackcaps dented India’s confidence with two back-to-back drubbings in the series and winning it as well.
