Bengaluru rains: Many private companies in the city are allowing their employees to work from home due heavy rains, waterlogging, and transportation disruptions. The Bengaluru’s civic body Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) requested city residents to go out only when absolutely necessary and to exercise caution.

Bengaluru: Amid heavy rainfall that led to flooding in parts of Bengaluru, the Karnataka government declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in the IT capital on Wednesday. Bengaluru Urban District collector Jagadeesha made the announcement on Tuesday evening, as the met department has forecast more rain in the next few days.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Bengaluru, warning of heavy rainfall starting Thursday. To note, schools in the city had just reopened after the Dussehra break, and teachers have now been asked to conduct online classes for higher-grade students. Thursday will also be a public holiday on the occasion of Valmiki Jayanti.

Bangalore rains: WFH for office-goers

Many private companies in the city are allowing their employees to work from home due heavy rains, waterlogging, and transportation disruptions. The Bengaluru’s civic body Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) requested city residents to go out only when absolutely necessary and to exercise caution. Yelahanka Zone experienced significant rainfall on Tuesday, with Chowdeswari Nagar recording the highest at 73.5 mm and Jakkur receiving 65.5 mm.

Bengaluru rain: BBMP on alert

On Tuesday, Bengaluru’s civic body Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) said that a flood management team is ready to assist the residents in need at any time. The BBMP said, “We are monitoring areas that experienced rain throughout the day, and more rain is expected until 8 AM on 16/10/2024. Our flood management systems are active and we are helping the affected areas.”

The BBMP has also set up 24/7 control rooms and a helpline for reporting rain-related issues. The control rooms have been set up in eight zones of the city and the civic body also issued a helpline number (1533) to report rain-related issues.

Disaster response force deployed

In response to the heavy rain forecast, disaster response force personnel have been deployed in Bengaluru. Karnataka Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda stated said that in view of the rain-related accidents and emergencies, about 60 personnel have been drawn from the Karnataka State Disaster Response Force and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

“We are redeploying another 40 personnel to be on stand by for any necessity. We have put Fire and Emergency Services on stand by for immediate response,” he said.

The IMD has forecast very heavy rain, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and squall on Wednesday for north interior, south interior, and coastal parts of Karnataka till October 18.
