New Delhi: Ahead of the IPL 2025 mega-auction, the IPL retentions will be announced by the 10 franchises on the deadline day of October 31, Thursday. A lot of surprise inclusions and exclusions will be there when the franchises announce the final list of the players on the final day. A major overhaul is expected ahead of the fresh 2025 cycle of the most entertaining T20 League in the world.

A few weeks earlier, the IPL Governing Council along with the BCCI announced the new retention rules for the upcoming edition of the cash-rich league. Keeping in mind the new rules, a lot of changes are expected before the participating franchises announce their final list of retained players. Here’s a look at the rules.

How many retentions have been allowed?

According to the IPL 2025 retention rules, a franchise can retain a maximum of six players, either in the retention phase by the deadline day or through the Right-To-Match (RTM) card during the IPL 2025 mega auction. Franchises have a flexibility to use the combinations of retentions and RTM to retain the total of six players.

Player retention slabs as per new rules

Capped Player 1: Rs 18 crore

Capped Player 2: Rs 14 crore

Capped Player 3: Rs 11 crore

Capped Player 4: Rs 18 crore

Capped Player 5: Rs 14 crore

Uncapped Player: Rs 4 crore

Can foreign players be retained?

There is no rule on retaining the number of overseas players a franchise wants to retain. If a franchise wishes to retain only foreign players, they can but in that case, the purse deduction will follow the rule which is there.

What happens if a franchise pays a player more or less than retained value?

If a team decides to pay capped player 2 Rs 18 crore, same amount would be deducted from its auction purse but if team choses to pay the same category player Rs 10 crore, which is less than his retention value, the deduction from the purse will still be Rs 14 crore as per the new rules.
