Russian State Broadcaster VGTRK Hit by Unprecedented Cyberattack; Pro-Ukrainian Hackers Claim Responsibility | Tech News

Russian state-owned broadcaster VGTRK has been hit by a massive cyberattack, disrupting its online services and internal systems. The pro-Ukrainian hacker group “Sudo-rm-RF” has claimed responsibility for the breach, which reportedly wiped servers and backups. Kremlin authorities have launched an investigation to identify the attackers and assess the damage.

Russian state-owned broadcaster VGTRK has been struck by a massive cyberattack, described as “unprecedented” by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Monday. While radio and TV broadcasts remain unaffected, the company’s online services and internal systems have been severely disrupted.

Kremlin Confirms the Breach

“Our state media holding, one of the largest, has faced an unprecedented hacker attack on its digital infrastructure,” Peskov told reporters. He added that specialists are working diligently to uncover the origins of the attack. “Specialists are working to find out all the circumstances, to understand where the traces left behind by those who organized this hacker attack on the critical infrastructure object lead,” he said.

Pro-Ukrainian Hacker Group Claims Responsibility

According to a report by RBC-Ukraine, an anonymous pro-Ukrainian hacker group known as Sudo-rm-RF has claimed responsibility for the cyberattack. This group was reportedly behind a previous attack in August 2023 on the Moscow Technical Inventory Bureau, which compromised citizens’ real estate data.

Servers Allegedly Wiped Clean

A source told Gazeta.ru that the cyberattack has had serious repercussions. “Russian state TV has been hit by an unprecedented cyberattack,” the source said. “The attack affected online broadcasting and the company’s internal services. This is going to take some time. I’ve heard the servers have been wiped, including backups. The problem, as I understand it, is very serious.”

Despite the severity of the attack, VGTRK assured the public that radio and TV broadcasting continue uninterrupted. However, the loss of servers and backups could have long-term effects on their digital platforms and internal operations.

Investigations Underway

Russian authorities are treating the incident as a critical breach of national infrastructure. Cybersecurity experts are being deployed to:

  • Identify the source of the attack
  • Assess the extent of the damage
  • Implement measures to prevent future breaches
