Mumbai: In a shocking turn of events, the Malwani police have apprehended a 26-year-old man, Akash Brijesh Singh, for allegedly cheating multiple victims in a vehicle rental scheme that ended with the sale of their vehicles. Authorities have successfully recovered 26 vehicles, including several foreign-made two-wheelers, during the investigation.
The case came to light when Satyajit Indar Rathod, a mobile repair shop owner from Chikuwadi, filed a complaint with the police. Rathod reported that Singh had approached him two months ago, claiming to be affiliated with a film production company. He expressed a need to rent several four-wheelers and two-wheelers for an upcoming shoot.
Confession for stealing 28 rented vehicles
Believing Singh’s story, Rathod enlisted the help of friends Abhijeet Vishwakarma, Arjun Ladva, Nitin Tiwari, and Kiran Rathod, who agreed to rent out their vehicles on a monthly basis during the production. However, after a month passed without payment, Rathod’s attempts to contact Singh proved futile, leading him to suspect foul play.
Concerned for his friends and himself, Rathod approached the Malwani police, who registered an FIR based on his complaint. Utilising Singh’s mobile number, investigators managed to trace and arrest him. During interrogation, Singh confessed to having sold a total of 28 vehicles he had rented from various acquaintances.
Vehicles sold across 3 different states, 26 recovered
According to police reports, Singh sold the vehicles in several states, including Goa, Rajasthan, and Gujarat. He allegedly assured buyers that the original owners were currently abroad and would provide the necessary ownership documents upon their return. “The buyers did not suspect any foul play since the vehicles were offered at lower prices,” a police officer explained.
The police confirmed the arrest of Singh and the recovery of 26 stolen vehicles, with efforts still ongoing to locate the remaining two vehicles involved in the scam.
