Mumbai: The streets of Mumbai came alive as Joy Avenue, an initiative by the youth wing of Shrimad Rajchandra Mission Dharampur (SRMD Youth), hosted its inaugural monthly community event on Sunday. Held on the Shrimad Rajchandraji Marg, near the Royal Opera House, this event aimed to transform the area into a thriving, joyful community space. Hundreds of Mumbaikars gathered to partake in a day filled with sports competitions, wellness sessions, dance workshops, and vibrant food stalls.
The event attracted prominent figures, including Pujya Gurudevshri Rakeshji, the founder of Shrimad Rajchandra Mission Dharampur; Mangal Prabhat Lodha, the Minister of Skills, Employment, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation for the government of Maharashtra; and Vivek Phansalkar, Mumbai’s Commissioner of Police. Supported by the Lodha Foundation, BMC, Mumbai Police, and BEST, the event highlighted the importance of fostering community and compassion while promoting well-being.
Sports, Wellness, and Dance: Joy Avenue’s Core Attractions
One of the main attractions at Joy Avenue was the array of sports events that brought people of all ages together. From the rapidly growing game of pickleball to the excitement of skateboarding, kickboxing, and box cricket, there was something for everyone. Attendees also enjoyed a variety of board games, encouraging friendly competition and bonding among community members.
The wellness activities offered a space for reflection and self-care. Participants engaged in rhythmic yoga, chair yoga, and cardio workshops, with some even trying out unique offerings like boxing cardio and tea meditation. These sessions encouraged people to prioritise their mental and physical well-being, creating a holistic experience.
Dance lovers had the opportunity to take part in workshops that spanned a wide range of styles, including salsa, Zumba, garba, and African rhythms. These workshops not only promoted fitness but also celebrated Mumbai’s cultural diversity.
Community Spirit, Food, and Creativity
The Joy Avenue event was a feast for both the mind and body. The wide variety of food stalls ensured there was something to suit every taste. From local favourites to international dishes, the culinary offerings provided a delightful break between activities.
Art and creativity were also front and centre at the event. Attendees explored their artistic side with activities like Mandala art, pottery, and tattoo art. Photo booths and live music performances added to the atmosphere, making it a memorable day for all.
A special feature was the petting zone, where attendees could interact with various animals, adding a therapeutic and heart-warming element to the day. The presence of self-organised stalls selling products and the participation of nonprofits in the “compassion zone” highlighted the importance of social responsibility and giving back to the community.
Honouring Mumbai’s Unsung Heroes
A significant part of Joy Avenue was dedicated to honouring the unsung heroes of Mumbai. Individuals such as Dattatraya Sawant, an auto-rickshaw driver by day and teacher by night, and Rohan More, a Senior Station Officer at Nana Chowk Fire Station, were recognised for their extraordinary contributions to the city. Others, like Virendra Vadwana, honorary traffic warden, and Anant Yenpure, head constable at DB Marg police station, were also celebrated for their tireless service.
Spreading Joy and Compassion
The purpose of Joy Avenue extended beyond recreational activities. The event aimed to bring the youth out of their homes and off their phones, encouraging them to reconnect with their community. The programme also aimed to promote compassion among community members and to undertake local initiatives that foster a spirit of togetherness.
During the inauguration, Atmarpit Nemiji, the vice-president of Shrimad Rajchandra Mission Dharampur, expressed his joy: “I am overwhelmed by the joyful and thrilling atmosphere at Joy Avenue.”
Bhushan Gagrani, the Municipal Commissioner, told The Free Press Journal: “The Joy Avenue initiative is an extension of that noble endeavour. I congratulate the SRMD YouthWing for this remarkable initiative and for utilising this public space so effectively.”
In a city as vibrant and diverse as Mumbai, Joy Avenue serves as a reminder of the power of community and the importance of coming together to celebrate life, wellness, and compassion.
