Mumbai: Just two days after a manager of a public sector bank took his own life by jumping off the Atal Setu, a section of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) in Mumbai, a 52-year-old businessman from Matunga also jumped off the bridge early on Wednesday.
The police identified the deceased as Philip Hitesh Shah, a businessman residing in Matunga with his family. They have stated that Shah had been experiencing depression for several months, and his family believes that this may have led him to take his own life.
Senior Police Inspector, Anjum Bagwan from Nhava Sheva Police station said, “Approximately at 9 a.m., we were informed that an unidentified individual stopped their vehicle on the northbound side about 14.4 kilometers from Navi Mumbai and jumped into the sea.”
A rescue team was quickly sent to the spot by the Navi Mumbai Police. The body was retrieved and taken to the hospital, where Shah was declared dead before receiving any medical attention. Bagwan added that the police inspected his vehicle and found his Aadhar card which helped them in his identification and then his family was contacted.
Deceased was allegedly depressed
Shah’s wife informed the police that he had been suffering from mental distress and depression for the last few months and was receiving treatment. “He left home at approximately 8 am, stating that he was heading to an event and would be back soon. However, he chose to come to Atal Setu to take his own life,” Bagwan added.
Previous incidents
The businessman’s death marks second such fatality in past three days. On 30 September, a deputy bank manager also tragically took his own life in a similar manner. His wife cited ‘tremendous work pressure’ as potential reason behind the man’s extreme move.
Over the last nine months, following the opening of Atal Setu, at least six individuals have tried to end their lives from the bridge. One person was stopped from attempting self-harm after a cab driver alarmed the authorities.
