Hyderabad: In a groundbreaking move, Hyderabad is set to unveil its first park designed to cater to the visually challenged and people with disabilities, providing an inclusive space where they can independently experience nature. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is spearheading this innovative initiative with the development of “Divyang Park” in Jubilee Hills.
Location and inauguration date
Scheduled to open by November, this unique park will be located on Road No. 51 in Jubilee Hills and will be the first of its kind in the city. GHMC has earmarked Rs 1 crore for the project, with tenders already floated for the upcoming construction. The park is designed with accessibility at its core. Braille signage, sensory railings, and directional signs will be placed throughout to ensure visually impaired visitors can navigate the space independently. Informational displays will describe the flora and fauna, while safety signs will promote a secure environment for all visitors.
Key features and highlights
As per Anurag Jayanti, Zonal Commissioner’s quote on TOI, the uniqueness of this Divyang Park lies in its sensory gardens, which are specifically designed to engage the visually challenged through their other senses.
Accessibility begins from the parking lot, which will feature non-slip tactile flooring, wheelchair-friendly pathways with anti-slip coatings, and reflective road markings. For visually impaired visitors, tactile concrete pavers with raised dots and bars will guide them along the park’s paths. The park will also offer specialized play equipment for children with disabilities, including a three-seater merry-go-round for physically challenged kids and a wheelchair-accessible version for those using wheelchairs or crutches. An outdoor shoulder exercise station will help improve children’s arm strength and mobility.
With its thoughtful and inclusive design, Divyang Park is poised to set a new benchmark for public spaces in Hyderabad. The park will serve as a sanctuary for recreation and therapy, ensuring people of all abilities can enjoy the beauty of nature independently.
