Bengaluru: Mining baron G Janardhana Reddy on Monday merged his Karnataka Rajya Pragathi Paksha (KRPP) with the BJP in the presence of party state president BY Vijayendra, former CM BS Yediyurappa and several other leaders from Kalyana Karnataka region. Reddy decided to join the BJP ahead of Lok Sabha elections after meeting Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi last week.
The BJP aims to consolidate Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe votes in the Kalyana Karnataka region with the induction of Reddy and his supporters.
Reddy rejoined the BJP 15 months after he formed KRPP just before the Assembly elections. The former minister formed his party after BJP leaders did not assure him a ticket in the Assembly poll held in May 2023.
Reddy’s once close aide B Sriramulu is contesting on the BJP ticket from the Ballari Lok Sabha segment. With the induction of Reddy, the BJP will benefit in Ballari, Koppal, Vijayanagara and Raichur districts.
In the 2023 assembly election, he was instrumental in the defeat of his two brothers, G Karunakara Reddy and G Somashekara Reddy, who were BJP candidates from Harapanahalli and Ballari City respectively.
Reddy fielded his wife Aruna Lakshmi against his brother and BJP candidate Somashekara Reddy in Ballari City and ensured his defeat. Congress candidate Nara Bharath Reddy won from there. In the Rajya Sabha elections held on February 27, he supported Congress.
