A young man from Hyderabad, who went to Canada to do his Masters degree in 2019, drowned in a lake in Toronto on Sunday, September 16 while boating on a lake, reports said.
The victim, Praneeth who was a native of Meerpet, Rangareddy district, had gone on a holiday with his brother and friends to a cottage near Clear lake, Toronto on Saturday to celebrate his brother’s birthday.
Praneeth accidentally fell into the lake while boating and drowned before help could arrive. Rescue teams took more than ten hours to reach the lake and the body was retrieved in the evening, according to Praneeth’s father A Ravi. Toronto police are investigating the incident.
The family of the victim was informed on Monday morning by one of his friends. The family is in contact with his friends in Canada, who are coordinating with local officials. The family has urged the government for assistance in bringing his body back to India.
His grieving father noted the tragic irony that the birthday celebration turned into a day of mourning.
This comes after two other Indian students drowned at Milla Milla falls near Cairns in Queensland, Australia. The two students belonged to Bapatla and Prakasam districts in Andhra Pradesh.
