Hyderabad: Telangana High Court on Monday, September 30, pulled up Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) commissioner AV Ranganath and Ameenpur Tahsildar over the demolitions being carried out by the agency.
The commissioner and Tahsildar appeared before the court over a writ petition filed questioning the demolition of a building against a high court order.
‘Will be forced to stay GO 90’:
During the hearing, the court addressing AV Ranganath said, “Mr Ranganath don’t try to please your political bosses and executive bosses. We are not happy with Hydraa. If you continue in this way, we will have to stay GO 90, a government order governing hydraa. As per the GO, hydra has many other function as well but the focus seems to be on demolitions alone. Twenty lunch motion petitions have been filed against Musi demolitions as well.”
The court came down heavily on the commissioner and questioned him if the agency intends to terrorise people. “What is your intention? Is it to terrorize people? In one of the interviews you talked about Article 21 of the Constitution. Are you not aware of the citizen’s rights under Article 21 (right to life and personal liberty)? It is not right to try to change Hyderabad in one day. How can it be concluded as Full Tank Level (FTL) area when it is not legally established?”
Addressing Ameenpur Tahsildar, the court said, “Are you aware that (according to law) you can’t carry out demolitions on Saturdays, Sundays & after sunset – there are several judgments to that effect including a full bench judgment of Telangana High Court.”
The hearing has been adjourned to October 15.
Political tiff between Congress, BRS:
Hydraa has come under severe criticism and scrutiny from opposition parties BRS and BJP for its demolitions across various areas of the city. Houses have also been marked for demolition in the Musi catchment area for Musi River Development Project. However, Congress countered the claims and said that the opposition is spreading fear among the public.
